Finding your First Job

 

 

IRC San Diego offers comprehensive pre- and post-employment services. IRC staff will assist you in building or updating your resume, discussing career goals, overcoming obstacles, identifying job opportunities, and aiding in job applications.

 

Our Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) program pairs language classes with employment training, such as navigating the US job system, applying for work, and increasing personal skills to advance their career. 

Services provided include:

  • 6 weeks of classes
  • Practice English
  • Financial literacy, computer literacy, driver training
  • In-language Work Readiness Training
  • Develop important employment-related English skills
  • Earn Welfare to work hours
  • Paid on-the-Job Training
  • Learn how to fill out job applications
  • Apply for jobs
  • Practice interview for jobs

 

The San Diego Newcomers Project (SDNP) is a cash assistance and employment support program for eligible individuals and households. SDNP includes the Refugee Cash Aid (RCA) program, as well as employment services. The goal of this project is to enable all the employable participants to have a job within 12 months and involves case management,  employment services, acculturation, English Language Training (ESL) and cash assistance. 

Services provided include:

  • Building a resume
  • Job applications
  • Networking with prospective employers
  • Mock interview preparation, transportation to interview site, interpretation services
  • Hiring paperwork assistance    
  • Assistance with work-related expenses
  • Monthly cash aid distribution 
  • Monthly bus pass assistance
  • ESL Classes on speaking, reading, writing, and listening

Entering or Reentering a Career

IRC San Diego’s Career Program, connects clients with short term certificate training or vocational training to prepare them for a specific career field. We offer relicensing services including academic degree evaluations. Our services are individualized based on the client’s professional history and their career interests.

 Services Include:

  • Career assessment and coaching to help clients identify what career fields might be best suited for them.
  • Access to short-term certification trainings to help clients get professional jobs.
  • Academic degree evaluation and relicensing services
  • Work readiness workshops to help clients become familiar with American work culture
  • Access to professional and experienced mentors
