Learn essential job searching skills to help you secure your first U.S. job, earn credentials, and receive guidance to advance or re-enter your career.

Early Employment

Services provided by our two Employment Programs

Employment Specialists from our Early Employment Team can work with you to understand the United States workforce and to find your first job in the United States to achieve self-sufficiency. Towards the end of the program, you may be referred to our Economic Empowerment Programs who work with clients to identify their strengths, grow in their careers, and progress towards their goals.

 

Introduction to Programs

  • Orientation of our program services and timeline
  • Explanation of different employment program options, like TANF, RCA and Matching Grant (MG)
  • Eligibility assessment for individuals and families
    • Clients who do not qualify for MG are referred to DSHS for case management and employment services
    • MG-qualified clients are enrolled in the program and connected to their MG caseworker for employment services and other benefits 
       

Services for Matching Grant (MG) Clients

  • Resume building or updating
  • Orientation to online job search steps and available tools (like Indeed and others)
  • Support for job search and applications
  • Job readiness training and preparation for your first job
  • One-on-one interview preparation
  • Provide transportation to job interviews, job fairs, and workplace orientations
  • Identify your skills, interests, work experience, and goals through a Self-Sufficiency Plan
  • Following up with employers to ensure regular communication
  • New hire paperwork and onboarding assistance
  • Review and explanation of job documents, benefits and contracts
  • Inviting you to job workshops and presentations from employers who are seeking job applicants
  • Interpretation assistance as needed throughout the process 
     

Client Responsibilities

  • Be honest with the employment team
  • Be open minded, the first job will not be your last one  
  • Be on time for all appointments, job shifts, workshops, classes, and meetings
  • Maintain regular communication with your employment specialist
  • Call your supervisor if you must miss work  
  • Inform your supervisor at least two weeks before upcoming appointments
  • After job placement, employment specialists will do a follow up with you and your supervisor to check in about performance or any concerns
  • Provide a copy of your first, second, third paystub/paycheck to your employment specialist  
  • Talk to an employment specialist if there are issues at work so that they can follow up
  • Do not quit a job without having a new job; if you must quit, inform your supervisor at least 15 days prior
  • Inform your employment specialist if you lose your job for any reason
